Support your child in a crisis

Children can face many difficult situations in life which they are unable to control. This could be things like their parents’ divorce, a severe illness, the death of a loved one, or some other difficult situation. A child can also be affected by major crises, such as pandemics, climate change, and war. Anxiety and fear are normal reactions in situations where one’s feeling of safety is threatened and where a child needs support from an adult.

The ability of parents and other adults working with children to manage their own feelings and offer the child support in coping with a difficult situation strengthens the child’s mental resources. There are good methods for managing anxiety.

The purpose of the Let’s Cope Together website is to offer easily adopted methods for parents and others working with children to cope with a stressful everyday life. The website is free and open to all.

The Let’s Cope Together website was created at the University of Turku at the start of the pandemic. The study related to the pandemic themed site proved that parents gained skills from the website that helped them calm themselves and their children.

We have updated the website, and the methods for handling anxiety can now also be used for worries that other kinds of crises cause children and young people. The website is not suited to treating trauma.

Who are we?

The Let's cope together website has been created by the Voimaperheet research group at the University of Turku. We develop and research self-study programmes which promote and maintain the mental wellbeing of children, young people and families, as well as remote treatment programmes for early support. You can find more information about Voimaperheet on this website: https://sites.utu.fi/voimaperheet/en/
